Common agricultural policy 2023‑2027
A new common agricultural policy was adopted in Sweden and the rest of the EU in 2023. The total budget for the strategic plan is approximately SEK 60 billion for the period 2023‑2027.
EU’s new agricultural policy will provide Member States with better opportunities to deal with the challenges facing the food sector and the rural areas, such as climate change, threatened biological diversity and the profitability and competitiveness of businesses. At the same time, Member States shall be able to continue to support farmers in a way that contributes to sustainable and competitive agriculture.
The strategic plan has three objectives on which the work of all EU Member States shall be based. The strategic plan shall
- foster a smart, competitive, resilient and diversified agricultural sector ensuring long-term food security
- support environmental protection and climate action and contribute to achieving the environmental and climate-related objectives of the Union
- strengthen the socio-economic fabric of rural areas.
The three general objectives are then broken down into nine specific objectives:
- to support viable farm income
- to increase competitiveness
- to improve the farmers’ position in the food chain
- to contribute to climate changes mitigation and adaptation and promote sustainable energy
- to foster sustainable development and efficient management of natural resources
- to contribute to halting and reversing biodiversity loss, enhance ecosystem services and preserve habitats and landscapes
- to support generation renewal
- to contribute to vibrant rural areas
- to ensure high food quality and improve animal welfare.
