E-services for registration of plant varieties and Plant Breeders' Right

Here you will find the e-services for the registration of plant varieties in the Swedish National list of varieties and for the registration of Swedish Plant Breeders' Right. In the e-service, you will be able to submit six different types of applications.

Until the issue has been resolved, you can submit your application using our forms. Links to the various forms are provided below.

If you do not have any Swedish identification number and address identification connected to the applicant, agent and preliminary maintainer, please contact us.

Register plant varieties

This is the application to register a plant variety in the Swedish National List of Varieties. This applies to agricultural varieties, vegetable varieties, ornamental plant varieties and fruit plant varieties.

The application fee for registration of one agricultural, or vegetable variety is 4,950 SEK. There is no application fee for registration of ornamental plant varieties or fruit plant varieties. You must pay the application fee by card in the e-service. If you are unable to pay by card you have to fill in the form Registration of plant variety to the Swedish list of varieties.

In the e-service you can submit applications to register multiple varieties at the same time.

Information that you must submit in the e-service when you register a plant variety

  • Your identification number, as well as a special address identification for the applicant. If there is a representative or a maintainer, their identification number and special address identification must also be registered. If you do not have identification number or a special address identification for foreign applicants, contact us via e-mail before submitting your application, vaxtsort@jordbruksverket.se.
  • Overall characteristics for the variety you wish to register.
  • Your variety´s proposed denomination. It is possible to complete the application form without the variety denomination. You may complete the application with this information later, through our e-service “Supplement with Variety Denomination”.
  • The preliminary variety identification or the breeders' reference number for the variety.
  • The name of any trademark and the country in which you have applied for or registered the trademark.
  • Information about any previous applications, either for plant breeders' rights or for registration in a national list of varieties, in Sweden or any other country or to CPVO, including the application date, registration date, country, variety denomination, variety identification or the breeders' reference.
  • Information on the official technical examination of the variety's distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS examination). Attach a DUS report or a preliminary variety description prepared in accordance with the CPVO's or UPOV's technical questionnaire.
  • Possible identification reference for a GMO variety.

If the application concerns a fruit or berry variety that is to be registered as a variety with an officially recognized description and is not subject to DUS examination, you must attach a detailed description of the variety.

If you are the applicant´s representative, you must attach a letter of attorney.

Registration of conservation varieties or amateur varieties

This is the application to register conservation varieties or amateur varieties. An amateur variety is a vegetable variety without value for commercial cultivation, but which has been developed for cultivation under special circumstances. This means that the variety has been developed to, for example, be cultivated in a special climate or in special soils.

The application fee for registration of one variety is 1,320 SEK. You must pay the application fee by card in the e-service. If you are unable to pay by card you have to fill in the form.

Information that you must submit in the e-service when you register a conservation variety or a variety developed for growing under particular conditions

  • Your identification number, as well as a special address identification for the applicant. If there is a representative or a maintainer, their identification number and special address identification must also be registered. If you do not have identification number or special address identification, please contact us via e-mail before you submit your application, vaxtsort@jordbruksverket.se.
  • Whether the variety is included in the NordGen, the gene bank, or in the National Gene Bank for vegetatively propagated plant material, you should provide the accession number. If you do not have an accession number, you must explain why it is unavailable.
  • Why the variety is worthy of conservation and information about its origin.
  • What is specific or unique about the variety you wish to register, together with a detailed description of the variety.
  • The variety denomination (official variety name) for your variety and synonyms. It is possible to complete the application form without the variety denomination. You may provide this information later through our e-service “Supplement with Variety Denomination”.
  • The name of any trademark and country in which you have applied for or registered a trademark.
  • Possible identity designation for GMO varieties.
  • Specify from where data for the variety's distinctiveness, uniformity and stability were obtained.

If you are a representative of the applicant, you must attach a letter of attorney.

Registration of Plant Breeders’ Right

This is the application to register a Swedish Plant Breeders’ Right.

The application fee for registration of one plant variety is 4,950 SEK. You must pay the application fee by card in the e-service. If you are unable to pay by card you have to fill in the form.

Information that you must submit in the e-service when you register a Plant Breeders’ Right

  • Your identification number, as well as a special address identification for the applicant. If there is a representative or a maintainer, their identification number and special address identification must also be registered. If you do not have identification number or special address identification, please contact us via e-mail before you submit your application, vaxtsort@jordbruksverket.se.
  • The preliminary variety identification or the breeders' reference number.
  • The proposed variety denomination for your variety. It is possible to complete the application with the variety denomination later. You may provide this information later through our e-service “Supplement with Variety Denomination”.
  • A novelty declaration.
  • The name of any trademark and the country in which you have applied for or registered the trademark.
  • The person or the persons who bred the variety. You must also specify how you obtained access to the variety. Attach any supporting documentation confirming transfer of rights, if applicable.
  • Information about any previous applications for plant breeders' rights or for registration a national list of varieties, in Sweden or any other country or to CPVO, application date, registration date, country, variety denomination, variety identification or the breeders' reference number.
  • If you are claiming priority, you must specify the country in which the earlier application was submitted, the application date, reference number and name of the application. You also have to attach documents supporting the priority claim.
  • If the variety has been sold or otherwise exploited, prior to the date of submission of the application, you must specify the country in which it was sold, when it was sold and under which variety denomination.
  • Information on official technical examination of the variety's distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS examination). Attach a DUS report or a preliminary variety description prepared in accordance with the CPVO's or UPOV's technical questionnaire.
  • Possible identification reference for a GMO variety.

If you are a representative of the applicant, you must attach a letter of attorney.

Complete the application with variety denomination

If you have submitted an application to register a plant variety or Plant Breeders’ Right, you may complete the application with the variety denomination if it is missing from your application.

Information that you must submit in the e-service when you complete the application with the variety denomination

  • Your identification number, as well as a special address identification for the applicant. If there is a representative or a maintainer, their identification number and special address identification must also be registered. If you do not have an identification number or special address identification, please contact us via e-mail before you submit your application, vaxtsort@jordbruksverket.se.

If you are a representative of the applicant, you must attach a letter of attorney.

Renewal of plant variety registration period

This is the application for renewal of the registration period.

The application fee for renewal of the registration period for one plant variety is 3,330 SEK. The fee will be invoiced.

Information that you must submit in the e-service when you apply for renewal of the registration period

In the application, you must provide the following information, among other things:

  • Your identification number, as well as a special address ID for the applicant. If there is representative and maintainer, they must also provide their identification numbers and special address IDs. For foreign companies, you should instead provide identification number and special address ID. If you do not have a special address ID or an identification number for a foreign applicant, please contact us before submitting your application by email at, vaxtsort@jordbruksverket.se.

If you are completing the application as a representative of the applicant, you must attach a letter of attorney.

Withdrawal of an application or registration of plant variety or Plant Breeders’ Right

This is the application for withdrawal of an application or registration of a plant variety or a Plant Breeders’ Right.

Information that you must submit in the e-service when you apply for withdrawal of an application or registration of plant variety or Plant Breeders’ right

In the application, you must provide the following information, among other things:

  • Your identification number, as well as a special address identification for the applicant. If there is a representative or a maintainer, their identification number and special address identification must also be registered. If you do not have an identification number or special address identification, please contact us via e-mail before you submit the application, vaxtsort@jordbruksverket.se.

If you are going to withdraw an application, please enter

  • area of use (agricultural, vegetable or fruit plant)
  • species
  • preliminary variety identification or the breeders' reference number.

If you are going to withdraw a registered plant variety or a plant breeders' right, you must state

  • area of use (agricultural, vegetable or fruit plant)
  • species
  • the variety denomination.

If the variety is listed in the Swedish list of varieties, you must also indicate whether the application concerns a market extension period for the plant variety.

If you are a representative of the applicant, you must attach a letter of attorney.

Think about this before you apply

Check that the variety has not already been registered and that on one else has applied for its registration. You can do this by consulting the Swedish National list of varieties.

You need e‑identification to log in

To log in to the e-service, you need an e‑identification, for example mobile BankID or Freja eID. An e‑identification is personal and linked to your personal identity. Contact your bank or Freja to obtain e‑identification.

If you do not have an e-identification, you can still use the service, but not all functions will be available. If you are a foreign applicant or foreign representative and do not have an e-identification, you must pay the application fee at the time of submitting the application.

Processing of personal data

The Swedish Board of Agriculture processes the personal data that you provide in your application for the purposes of permit administration, inspections, statistics, information and for monitoring, evaluation and analysis. The legal basis for processing your personal data is the exercise of official authority. The data is processed electronically. The personal data we process about you may be shared with other public authorities and private parties in accordance with EU legislation, national laws, regulations and international agreements.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture will retain the data in accordance with the rules governing the archiving of public authority records. If you wish to access the personal data we process about you, please contact our Customer service.
