Stem cell-based research replaces animal experiments
The 3Rs Center has visited a research group at Lund University, that has developed a method to replace mice in their research on neurological diseases. Listen to the explanation of the method in our film!
Henrik Ahlenius and his colleagues at Lund Stem Cell Center are developing models with human cells – pluripotent stem cells. Earlier, they used mice to derive primary astrocytes (a type of brain cell), which they use to study the impact of the astrocytes on neurological diseases.
Their stem cell-based model have completely replaced the use of mice in their own lab, and the method has also been spread to more than 50 labs all over the world. Henrik Ahlenius talks about this and the potential of pluripotent stem cells, in our film.
