Intervention
The EU can intervene in certain agricultural markets if supply exceeds demand. In Sweden, the Board of Agriculture is the authority that handles the actual transactions - buying and storing the surplus quantities.
Products that can be subject to intervention
The following products can be subject to public intervention: barley, wheat, skimmed milk powder, beef, and butter. Products must fulfil certain quality criteria in order to be eligible.
Public intervention is open as follows:
- Wheat: 1 November-31 May
- Butter and skimmed milk powder: 1 Mars-30 September
- Beef and veal: anytime, if the EU price is below a certain level.
Selling from intervention stocks
The products purchased by the intervention agency will later be sold, either within the EU or to a non-member country. Normally the intervention product is sold through a tendering procedure.
Whenever the Board of Agriculture sells products from intervention stocks, we announce it here.
